Photographer Joel Sartore on De-Extinction CBS Sunday Morning. Joel Sartore is one of my favorite photographers. Most of his work is produced for National Geographic but now and again he shows up on another favorite of mine, CBS Sunday Morning. This past Sunday’s show highlighted the ongoing issue of species going extinct. I had never realized that the passenger pigeons were numbered in the BILLIONS before they went extinct in the early 1900’s. Billions! I thought the near total elimination of 65 million American Bison was a huge number. Take a few moments to watch Joel’s segment below. He highlights a project scientists are working on called de-extinction. They’re actually working on recreating a passenger pigeon. Kind of Jurassic Park-like science and extremely interesting. Any thoughts on all of this? Should we be messing with nature to the point of rebuilding an extinct species. Joel has some great thoughts on this. Let us know what you think in the comments below. I’m not sure how I feel.

An ever expanding human population demands more from the earth. As human needs increase we place increasing demands on all wild beings. Homo sapiens refuse to accept this fact.

Kent, thanks for your input. I could not agree with you more. I’m confident Mother Nature will figure it all out though that may not be in the best interest of Homo sapiens. My thoughts are to love, appreciate and be as considerate to the Mother Earth as possible while enjoying, appreciating and sharing what we still have. We live in an amazing time. We need to enjoy for what it is and amazing gift.
