Firmware Updates For OM-1 and OM-1 ll
OM System has come through with their promise to bring some of the features of the OM-1 Mark ll to the original OM-1. I like the firmware update procedure OM System uses via their OM Workspace software but you can also update via their cell phone app. I’ve never tried the cell phone app but people tell me it works great. Either way, unlike other manufacturers OM System provides a much smoother process to update your cameras.
You can also simply download the firmware and follow their instructions to install it. However, I’m a big fan of the process via their OM Workspace procedure. One caveat is if you’re using one of Apple’s new silicon Macs. That would be either the M1, M2, or M3 processors. You can read more about how to get through the M processor issues in this link. Once you get your M processor Mac setup for OM System downloads the firmware updates are super simple via OM Workspace.
OM-1 Version 1.7 Includes
- Enhanced All-Target Mode Autofocus: Improvement in AF performance with All-Target Mode in S-AF and C-AF. Optimized tuning of the focus position when the AF area is set to all targets.
- Improved Menu Operation: The erase/trash button can now be used as a menu access shortcut, allowing for easier operation with the right hand.

- Enhanced Handheld High-Res Shot: Improved composition algorithm for handheld high-res shot.
- Operational Stability: Improved stability of some functions.
OM-1 Mark II Version 1.2 Includes
- Enhanced Handheld High-Res Shot: Improved composition algorithm for handheld high-res shot.

Go get your updates now. I downloaded mine with no issues. Time will tell if these updates make a difference or not.

I have a Windows machine and usually use the Workspace program. I tried to update it when I got the OM-1.2, but the updated Workspace won’t run on my machine for some reason. It opens and then immediately closes. I probably have to dig around in the registry to delete vestiges of the older version, but I don’t have the energy…
So I tried the iOS app. I don’t have cell reception at my house, so I couldn’t use the iOS app at home. The phone used wifi to connect to the camera, but then I needed a cell connection to connect to the firmware server via the internet — arrghh. I have to dog sit at my sister’s house next week, and I CAN get cell reception there so it will have to wait.
There’s also an (unofficial) way to download the firmware updates to an SD card and load them from the camera. It’s apparently what OM reps use when they’re doing the camera store visits where they’ll clean your camera. I may track that down.
